Canal Shores

Canal Shores

Canal Shores does it right, sitting just north of Chicago in Evanston the neighborhood golf course provides a haven for beginners as well as the experienced looking to play a few holes before dinner. The course is unique in its uses, during a round you might see more dogs on leashes than fellow golfers. The way Canal Shores serves the community sets it apart from virtually any other course in the nation, it is community centric, exactly what golf needs.

Northwestern Football tailgates are held on the grounds, in the summer they have concerts every Friday night. Memories are made here, locals experience many firsts on the course, from first kiss to first beer to first hole in one.

Without a grounds-crew there is a lot of volunteer action, every Saturday community members congregate on a portion of the grounds to lend a hand and help to leave the course better than they found it. Last weekend, Whim Golf decided to join in the action, as we have done in the past to clear and get rid of extra brush and sticks that lined the left side of the 11th fairway. Joining in the session was the Northwestern University Men's Golf Team, whose program coach, Pat Goss, is a longterm participant in the courses health. There is an upbeat enthusiasm in the group, who see the value in giving back and leaving Canal Shores better than they found it. We support this view and hope you can make it out to Canal Shores next time you are in the Chicago area.
